Ethics and Politics

Dr. Wertheimer is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Vermont and Senior Research Scholar in the Department of Bioethics at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

He retired from UVM in 2005 after 37 years of service and during which he taught a broad range of courses including Philosophy of Law, Making Ethical Choices, and Political Ethics. In 1995 he was elected University Scholar.

He was a Fellow in the Program in Ethics and the Professions at Harvard University and a Fellow in the School of Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton.

He is the author of several books including Coercion (1987), Exploitation (1996), and Consent to Sexual Relations (2003).

His lecture will address Ethics in Politics -- principles to which ethical public officials should be committed and how ethics in politics might differ from other contexts.
